Being a walk leader with The Centurions is a rewarding experience that allows you to share your love of walking while helping others explore new routes and enjoy the great outdoors. Whether you’re leading a short, leisurely stroll or a more challenging hike, our walk leaders are the backbone of our group.

With The Centurions, the safety and enjoyment of our walkers are a top priority. While each individual walker is responsible for their own health, safety, and wellbeing, our walk leaders play an important role in ensuring our walks are well-planned and organized. Here’s how we do it:
Planning the Route: Leaders carefully choose routes suitable for the group’s abilities and provide clear details to all walkers in our Facebook walk adverts (and update posts) before each walk and just before each walk starts on the day.
Risk Assessments: Leaders follow our comprehensive Risk Assessment process to identify potential hazards and take steps to mitigate them.
Keeping the Group Together: Leaders ensure walkers stay together on any walk by having regular stops to check everyone is OK. On more advanced walks the leader will likely have an assistant to help as back-marker or route guide at the front while the leader stays at the back or switch roles around during a walk.
First Aid Awareness: While leaders are not required to be first aid trained, they are encouraged to familiarise themselves with basic first aid tips. It is always stated that all individual walkers must take responsibility for their own health, safety and well-being, that there will not be any medical person on the walks and each individual walker should carry their own first aid kit.
All walk leaders are expected to adhere to the Centurions’ Risk Assessment process by completing a risk assessment form for each walk.
All walk leaders are expected to familiarise themselves with other information about keeping walkers safe out walking. There is lots of useful information available online and a good resource is the Ramblers website.
